Health and Safety Program Overview
With the assistance of PBM Services in Baton Rouge, our entire Safety and Health Program was upgraded in November 2000. The program’s success can be attributed to a variety of new policies and programs, the most important of these being training.Employee training begins upon hire, with a (45) minute Safety Orientation, which includes Hazard Communications, personal protective equipment and general electrical safety. All employees are assigned a copy of the Safety and Health Program, hard hats, safety glasses and ear plugs. Other personal protective equipment, such as gloves, lanyards, etc., is kept on individual jobsites for use as necessary. The Program requires supervisors to attend an OSHA 10-Hour Class so they can be better prepared to handle safety on their jobsites. Weekly Tool Box Talks are held on all jobsites and are led by the site supervisor. General safety meetings are held quarterly for all employees and include training in whatever areas the Safety Committee deems necessary. Our own personnel, and some outside sources, such as Associated Builders and Contractors and the American Red Cross, lead the training sessions. Our program also requires the training of at least one person per site to be trained in First Aid/CPR. All large sites and all company vehicles are equipped with suitably sized First Aid Kits and fire extinguishers. Supervisors and Project Managers perform routine (surprise) safety inspections of their jobsites and issue warnings to anyone in non-compliance with our policies. These warnings become part of an employee’s permanent file and affect future bonus pay, etc. Numerous warnings can cause termination of employment. Through the Program a Safety Committee was created to meet bi-monthly to discuss safety issues, assess training needs and plan upcoming safety meetings. The Committee, at this time, is made up of Supervisors and members of management; however, the Committee is open to any employee who wishes to participate. Our Program includes a Drug-Free Workplace Policy, to which ALL employees must adhere. The policy encompasses pre-employment, post-accident, for-cause and other testing as required by our customers. Other aspects of the Safety and Health Program include:
